Cummins Begs Ram Truck Owners to Update Their Rides to Avoid Fines

Original Source: MSN

Do you own a Ram truck with a diesel engine? If so, Cummins needs you to go to a local dealership for a software update. If you don’t take your ride in for service then Cummins has to face expensive fines.

Cummins begs Ram truck drivers to get a software update

Cummins is still in trouble for allegedly violating Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and federal government policies.

The federal government accused diesel engine manufacturer of violating the Clean Air Act. The lawsuit resulted in a $2 billion settlement, but Cummins still could face more fines due to Ram truck drivers.

According to Yahoo Autos, the EPA claims Cummins installed illegal emissions defeat devices on about 630,000 Ram trucks built between 2013 and 2019.

Also, the OEM allegedly failed to disclose auxiliary emission control devices on over 330,000 model year 2020 – 2023 Ram pickup trucks.

As part of the settlement, the EPA demands that Cummins updates the emissions software on 85% of the trucks involved within three years, or it will get slammed with more penalties.

But Cummins would like to desperately avoid paying more penalties after paying the largest Clean Air Act penalty ever.  So, please go get the software update. It only takes an hour and doesn’t involve any hardware changes.

Cummins also shared that there has been little to no change in the fuel economy as a result of the update. Also, drivers who frequently tow heavy loads shouldn’t notice a decrease in MPG.

But the update could impact the amount of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) the trucks use. But the change is only about 1.5% in fuel consumption. Heavily loaded trucks could see a 2.5% increase.

To get more people in the door, Cummins is performing the update at no cost and offering goodie bags. Plus, drivers will receive extended warranties to cover their emissions components.
